I came across an older copy of this book I used when I was in my family nurse practitioner program a few years ago. I decided to go on amazon to see if there was an updated version and found this one. I currently use it in practice and also as a reference for my NP students that I precept. This is a must have especially when you don't always no what test to order for certain conditions. One of my students went on to purchase her own copy as well. It is very straight forward and well written.
I got the 3rd edition of this book when I was originally in nursing school in 2009. I am currently a few semesters from getting my WHNP Master's and decided to see if there was an updated version. Only to discover that this is the ELEVENTH one since I first got mine. So, I ordered it and it just arrived tonight. I just opened the package and inspected the book. It has all of the great information that my old one has plus more. It is also a great portable size that will make it easy to take to clinicals. (Note: smaller size makes things a little more cramped, so it's not quite as easy on the eyes as my 3rd edition.) Plus, it has a more protective cover than my old one, which I like. I also really like the rounded edges. So many of my books end up with bent, turned up edges. The book is a little stiff, so it really needs to be held open with both hands, particularly to be able to read words that are closer to the binding (see photo). I imagine that it will loosen up with use. I checked the complaints that had been mentioned in previous reviews and it seems that all has been corrected. The pages that were said to be skipped are all there and the pages that were said to have repetition don't. Also, someone pointed out that albumin wasn't there and if it was checked under A, I can see how that person came to that conclusion. It's not there. It's under the protein section. All tests are in the index in the back, so they can be found that way, too.I definitely recommend this book!
I have been a nurse for many years. I have never purchased this book during all the years of my nursing nor purchased it while in nursing school (the oooolllldddeeerrr version of course, lol). This book tells it all. I wished I had purchased this long ago. The tests go into great detail of what, how, why test are done. At this time I also have renal calculi. I am looking for new information on IVP's. I have had IVP's before, but I wanted to know if there were any new changes about the test. It explains in the book the reason's why an IVP is done, what is done during the procedure, how the patient may feel during the procedure, the side effects of the IVP such as having a reaction to the dye. Also explains what the patient needs to do prior to taking the IVP (24 hr prep). Tells you how long the time span from start to finish of the IVP.This book covers everything about labs, radiology, etc. I just downloaded this on my Kindle, so I plan to do more reviewing when I look into it more. I looked over some of the labs tests and it goes into great detail of the tests.They even cover what color test tubes to use, if anyone is a new learner. I wished I had this a long time ago, working in ICU as we nurses draw labs on the patients and not the laboratory. It will give me more detailed information on labratory testing and any new changes. We have a lab book in ICU, but I swear it is not as good as this one. The book also makes it so easy to locate the information you need in a hurry.I just wanted to get some type of review on here for people who are interested in purchasing the book.So far I am very impressed and anyone wanting to purchase the book then I highly suggest you do. You can't go wrong with this book.
This is the best source of information about lab tests and lab test results I have found. A description of each test is given with its related physiology, procedure, and factors that may effect the test results. Most importantly the normal range for each test is given, broken down by sex and age in many cases. This is often much better than the medical laboratory provided ranges. A list of possible causes of abnormal findings is provided but no detail is provided. Imaging studies are also covered with a description of each process. There is a good description of the lumbar puncture (spinal tap) that outlines the various procedures, normal results, reasons to not take the test, possible complications, and after effects. Endoscopies, throat cultures nuclear studies among others are also included. However, one should have a basic knowledge of anatomy and biology to get the most from this book.
Has a decent overview for most tests; some are missing from the book but can be found easily at labtestsonline which i used more than Mosby's anyway. There is not quite enough of a comprehensive overview for all of the tests, but there are good clinical correlates that help tie in things for various disease states.
Nearly four years after purchasing this book for school... I still use it on a weekly basis as a full time RN. This is not only a great book to have for school, but I believe all nurses should at least have a reference to this book somewhere. The explanations are clear and concise and the information is easy to lookup. It gives you reasons that certain labs may or may not be correct. It's not overly large and fits perfect in my locker at work. WELL WORTH THE MONEY. All healthcare workers should have this book in their library.
Excellent lab value book, if you are doing care plans and have a specific disease and do not know how the lab value are affecting the person or the disease every lab value in this book has an explanation as to why it's affecting the person or disease. I love this book.
The content of this book is great. It is concise, easy to read and understand. However, an important and common test -Albumin-is missing from my book, along with every other page between 713 and 744, And then pages 681 through 712 are duplicated. EXTREMELY POOR QUALITY CONTROL!!
