We have all the books in this series and love them. Little man can't get enough of this one as well, although the element with atomic number 20 is Calcium not Carbon. The baby didn't seem to be upset by this, so I'll allow it!***UPDATE***It turns out we received one of the first runs of the book before the publisher corrected the error. The publishee called us and sent us a new copy with the correction. Thanks!
I've been a big fan of the Baby University books since I got Quantum Physics for Babies.My (nearly) 2 year old loves these books as well.Of the 5 books I own, I'm inclined to say this one is the most complex in the way the information is given, but it doesn't make it less interesting to my toddler. I find him pointing to the periodic table and I list elements to him and try explaining how elements became heavier and more complex over time.I really love the explanation about stars recycling atoms and how atoms from old stars still live within us as human beings. It shows ideas about universal scale cycles that have impacted our own cycles and how we're connected to the larger universe.All in all, I'm pretty pleased. I would give 5 stars of the information was a little simpler, but this are very very big concepts to break down for young children, overall, fantastic job.
I love this book! It's Neil deGrasse Tyson's stump speech... for babies! The book does contain one typo on one page. It shows the chemical symbol for calcium, labeled as carbon. My one year old doesn't seem to mind, though.
My son has a Ph.D in Astrophysics and his son recently turn one year's old. When I saw this book I could not buy it fast enough. When he opened it for his son at the birthday party, my son couldn't believe it, "Mum where do you find these things?" I have a bit of a reputation for finding the appropriate but distinctive gift! All I can say is that for the first time in my life I understand my son's career!!
This book is one that is either stand-alone, or one of a set that includes titles such as 'Rocket Science for Babies' and 'General Relativity for Babies'. Obviously, even the most mild treatment of such a topic is going to require either extraordinary talent on the part of the baby, or a book that is little more than a tactile experience for the baby. But here's the deal - this isn't meant just for babies (sorry to ruin the surprise!).This book is meant for the adults in the baby's life - if the adults begin to learn how to teach in very simple ways some of the most complex and deep of scientific truths and discoveries at a very early age, who knows? We might be producing the next Einstein or Newton. At the very least, we'll be raising a generation who isn't afraid of science and complex ideas, for they will have had them literally from the cradle. And that's what makes this series so great.This particular book starts with basic concepts useful in astronomy and astrophysics. A ball. A ball is a round sphere. So are planets! So, it is relatable, even to the adults in the room. The Sun is also a ball, but a bigger ball. The Earth goes around it. Other balls/stars are like the Sun - they are further away, the Sun is close up. Simple, yes, but you'd be astonished at just how many people don't get that! And perhaps they can be forgiven. Most of humanity didn't realize the distinction either until the 1600s when Christian Huygens (among others) worked to more definitely determine that fact.Don't worry, phrases like 'definitely determine' are not part of the book. It is colourful. It is fun. It is useful. An ideal gift in many ways, for baby and new parents.
When a book is only 24 pages long it’s hard to understand how there can be a typo. Ca is not the symbol for carbon. It’s the symbol for calcium.
This book may be intended for babies, but many adults could learn the basics of astrophysics from it very clearly. I wish this book had been available when I was teaching astronomy to college students. I would have made it available to entertain--and enlighten--them!
Bought four books in this series for my nephew's 1st birthday, and while he's still a bit young to appreciate them they were a hit with the grown-ups! They were discounted quite a bit when I ordered them and when they arrived they were a little worn as if they had been read a few times. I guess the warehouse workers like them too? Lol it wasn't too bad and my nephew's favorite thing to do with books is pull them off the shelf and throw them in the floor so it worked out alright. If they had been full price I probably would have returned them.
