While talking over marketing strategies for using THE RETURN in school curriculums, I asked Sonia Levitin what inspired her to write this profound yet hopeful young adult novel. I was touched by her response. In 1985 Ms. Levitin read an article in the LA Times about a secret rescue mission which was lead by common, yet valiant citizens. The mission was to free a community of Ethiopian Jews who were victims of extreme prejudice and cruelty there. Ms. Levitin was moved by this story. " A movement was created to spirit these people out," she explained. "It was the opposite of what happened in the Holocaust. People listened." Ms. Levitin feels personally drawn to the story because she herself had lost many family members to the Holocaust. "There was no place for them (her family) to go," she said. "There was no one to spirit them out." Ms. Levitin is herself a Holocaust survivor. For her, THE RETURN is a symbol of victory. THE RETURN is an American Library Association Best Books for Young Adults winner.

On the page facing the copyright page, the book is dedicated to Barbara Ribakove (Gordon) who founded NACOEJ (the North American Conference On Ethiopian Jewry) in 1984 to organize and advocate on behalf of Ethiopian Jews and which continues to work on behalf of those who still remain in Gondar and Addis Ababa.In the epilogue, page 178, Desta's experience is identified as Mivtzah Moshe -- Operation Moses -- the dramatic airlift of 1984 which brought 8,000 Jews out of Ethiopia.The pages in-between tell the modern miracle of the return of Ethiopian Jews to Jerusalem, Israel.The generation that seemed to appear out of ancient history from a hostile third world country has been integrated into Israeli society. Readers may be interested to know that female Ethiopian Jews were appointed as judges in 2016; the first male Ethiopian judge was appointed in 2018; and the first Ethiopian pilot finished his training in 2018. You may remember when Yityish Aynaw became Miss Israel in 2013 and represented her country at the Miss Universe competition."The Return" brings the reader on the long journey from the tukels (huts) of the Simien mountains to Jerusalem.
"The Return" by Sonia Levitin was an excellent book that I enjoyed reading. The book was about Desta, a young Jewish girl who lived in Ethiopia. Because Desta was Jewish and black, and because she lived in Ethiopa, the other Ethiopians called her and the people of her community "falashas" which means strangers. Desta lived with her aunt Kibret,her uncle Tekle, her brother Joas, and her sister Almaz. One day, Joas came up with a plan that they travel to Israel, the "promise land". Desta's aunt and uncle did not want them to leave and travel alone because they thought that they should listen to the bible and wait for the Messiah to lead them to the "promise land". Joas went behind his aunt's back and talked to Dan, Desta's future husband about traveling to Jerusalem. Aunt Kibret decided to let them go because she wanted Desta to get married in the "promise land". >The major reason why Desta chose to leave was to be free. She wanted to be able to go to school and not be considered a stranger anymore. She was treated like a prisoner in Ethiopia. Her community was guarded by men who made sure that the people there did not leave. For years she lived in famine and was forced to drink dirty water. They knew that if they were able to escape, their life in the "promise land" would be much better. >Desta, Joas, and Almaz had a very difficult journey. The three of them planned on leaving the day after Segid, a Jewish holiday, but instead they left the night of the holiday because soldiers were coming to their town and they did not want to get caught because they were already packed and they did not want to be suspected of anything. On their journey, they brought jugs of water, plenty of injera, a round and flat bread, and a rifle for protection. As their journey went on, they ran out of food. Joas performed desperate acts to get food. For example, he took the rifle and threatened a young girl on a farm to give him food. One night, as traveling along, they spoted a fire and they thought it was Dan, Kess Haim,Melake,and Weizero Channa. It was actually shifta,a group of bandits.Joas ran over to them and they shot him and he died. Desta and Almaz hid behind a bush until the morning. When morning came they dug a hole, wrapped a shamma around him, and buried him. Desta, even though she was in a state of morning she knew she had to go on. They traveled for many more days and finally met up with Dan, Kess Haim,Melake,Weizero Channa. They walked for a couple more days and finally reached the border of Sudan where there was a camp with food and water. They spent a few days and a bus came and brought them to Jerusalem. When they got there, Dan and Desta decided that they were going to hold off on their marriage so they could get educated. Desta was so happy that she had finally returned to her "promised land." >I thought that Desta was very a very courgerous young girl who was about my age. She had the courage to start out on a difficult journey and then found the strength to continue when she lost her brother. I could never imagine myself in her situation. I also liked reading the book because I learned about another culture that I didnt know much about before I read the book. I thought that it was a good book for summer reading. The Return, overall, was a great book. It was full of suspense and at some points it even maid you feel a little emotional about certain topics that they talked about in the book. At many different times in the book it was also full of drama and tragedy. Most of all this was a very educational book about how people were treated because of their religion. When you read a book like this, it makes you feel glad that you live in a country where you can walk home from places and not be yelled at for the religion that you practice or the ways in which you practice it. In the beginning of the book I found it really easy to get sidetracked with something else because in the beginning of the book. The beginning of the book wasn't as eventful as most of the other chapters after that. For the most part, the beginning of the book was to me, pretty much the explaining period of the book. The beginning showed you how they had to live up high in the mountain because if they lived anywhere else they would be made fun of for the religion in which they practice. The book is about a young girl named, Desta. Desta lives with her Aunt Kibret and Uncle Tekle up in the mountains in Ethiopia, along with her younger sister, older brother and the others that lived in the village. Up in the mountains they hid in fear of being killed for the religion that they practice. Many people have tried to escape to start a new life in the promised land, Israel, but they were caught. Desta used to attend school with her best friend, but they stopped attending school because they were called names that made them feel uncomfortable. So she lives with her Aunt and Uncle and works up in the mountains and kept her younger sister safe. One day, Dan, the grandson of Weizero Channa, came to bring the news that his grandmother had a dream that visitors are coming. Desta doesn't really care for Dan in the way of marriage, but ever since she was little they made it so that Desta must marry Dan and that's why he always visits the village up there so that he can see Desta. As time passed, Weizero Channa's dream came true. Many Jews came as visitors to Ethiopia from New York. Many of the people of the village asked many questions because they believed that they were the only people that practiced that religion. The visitors told the people of the village many stories of how they are free where they come from and about many other things. After the visitors left, Desta's older brother, Joas had an idea to leave Ethiopia and take Desta and Almaz with him to the promised land of Israel. Desta told Joas that she didn't really want to go because she was afraid that they would get caught and therefor be killed. After awhile, though Desta decided to take Almaz and go with Joas on the long journey to the Promised Land. Late one night Desta went out back to talk to Kess Haim and Dan to make plans about leaving the lands of Ethiopia. Desta never realized how much she cared for Dan until he risked a lot to help get them out of Ethiopia with out anyone seeing them. They took off on the long, dangerous journey which was filled with them being hungry and thirsty most of the time. Kess Haim and others led the way to the Promised land and everyday Joas, Desta, and Almaz tried to catch up to them so they could find the place together. On the way to the Promised Land they faced many rough tasks including death. What I mean by this is that Joas the older brother was killed. He was shot. Desta and Almaz were both shocked and they hid and didn't move like Joas told them to because whoever shot Joas would come after Desta and Almaz also. With Joas being gone they continued their journey to the Promised Land. After a long and treacherous journey they made it to the Promised land and started a new life together in the Promised Land of Israel. There they can live without being mad fun of because of their religion because where they are they are with people of their kind, the Jews. I thought that The Return by Sonia Levitin was a great book. It made me look at what happens to people of a different religion from a whole different angle. I have some family members who converted to the Jewish religion and this book really helped me to understand the history of what it was like for people of that religion to grow up and have to hide their real beliefs of what they believe in.
