I remember books my nephew would read that allowed him to choose different options which would skip him through the book. Each choice came to a different ending. This book is similar, in the fact that you skip pages according to your choice. But, that’s where the similarity ends. There’s so much more going on in this book. It’s a book of facts, a timeline, a book of historical illustrations that’s mixed together with your choices, your drawings and your act of actually tearing pages! (This request really distressed me, I’ve always told my kids never to tear the pages in a book)The font is unusual, the graphics look like hand drawn illustrations, and the options are interesting: a passenger, a crew member or a stowaway. Your choice sends you on to different pages to continue through the book. It seems you can actually read the book three times, acting out each of the possible scenarios.I feel it works best reading it with your child if they are still in elementary school. A middle schooler should be able to navigate the book on their own.The book seems to be very interactive asking the reading to draw lots of stuff. Many of the requests seem very unnecessary and silly. My grandson thought some of them were funny, but he would take a great deal of detail in his drawings and it distracted from the story. As the adult reading along with him, I was able to remind him of his goal. I was very impressed with the details and facts. As a retired teacher, I can see how this type of activity could really help get kids interested in history. I just feel some of the activities need to be more purposeful and not just silly request.Great idea that could be certain readers cup of tea!

I’m glad we got this hands-on book for our ten year old. He loves reading about Michigan shipwrecks, but any book that combines boats, water and adventure holds appeal. This one is even more exciting--Bill Doyle makes Titanic history learning fun by placing readers directly on that ship with three choices of being either a passenger, crew member or stowaway. I haven’t personally read the book, but may as well have. While this choose-your-own adventure was being read, ripped and drawn upon, I heard about interesting Titanic trivia facts (like some toilets flushed automatically, or the disaster may have been avoided had the lookouts used binoculars, which were locked up in the crow’s nest locker). Apparently the author is a bit cheeky too—every time our young reader made a not-so-wise survival decision, he ran into Amicus, a gopher that helps readers get out of adventure jams. At one point, Amicus told him to, “Go-pher a happier ending! Turn back to page 44 and try again!” He thought that was hilarious, and loved all the different adventure routes. While this is a fun book full of riddles, doodles, and a unique way to personally re-shape historical events, it’s also an eye-opener for children. They get to experience what it must have been like to be on a sinking ship. First class passengers had the best survival chances; crew members and stowaways weren’t so lucky. Escape This Book! Titanic is mainly lots of fun but it doesn’t sugar-coat the gravity of this ship’s disaster either.

Escape This Book Titanic was ordered for my granddaughter, who loves to draw and is quite good at it. Before giving her the book I read it myself. Like many readers of this review, I have seen the Titanic films and know the story of the famous disaster, at least from the filmmakers point of view. Our author, Bill Doyle supplies many of the facts about the Titanic and its maiden, and only, voyage that are not part of the films. As the title tells us, Escape This Book is not going to be a straight forward read. On the second page we are invited by “the world’s greatest escapologist” to accept “a very special mission” and that is to escape alive from the sinking Titanic. In order to survive we will need to “demolish, doodle, and decide our way out.” We can choose a variety of roles for ourselves and each of these roles will have a different escape path. From beginning to end the book is filled with pictures and drawings of all sorts to help us make our escape. The intended audience for this book are creative young people who like to draw, doodle, cut things out of books, and problem solve as they take an active part in a famous historical event. Readers may decide for themselves just how involved they want to get in the adventure. I have never seen anything like Escape This Book. If it gets young people to take an active part in their discovery of what actually happened on the Titanic, it has achieved its purpose.

These are so fun. This is probably the best one I've ever come across because not only is it a pick-your-own-fate, but it's a historic one, too (I love history), and gives a little glimpse into the Titanic and all that went on--on a child's level and in an exciting way that holds their attention.I was super excited to get this for my daughter, who is 8 and in 3rd grade. She loves it. There are pages to doodle on, directions to follow for drawing, and even pages in which you must tear the page or poke a hole in it; all while moving along through the story as the child chooses. She's having so much fun with it; and I'll never say no to something that is informationally good along with being interesting while keeping my children away from screens. Reading is so important, and sadly, an increasingly lost art in our culture, especially for kids. I'd highly recommend it. I hope to see more of these types of books from these authors in the near future!

This is one of the most unique books that we've used. It is a "choose your own adventure" style but the kids get to draw in the book. It's great for sparking imagination, it teaches some history, and it makes kids think about what they might actually choose if they were in that situation. We've only gone through about 1/2 of the scenarios so far, but have already pre-purchased for some birthday gifts later this year. It's a really cool book with good vocabulary. The almost 8 year old, who is an advanced reader, really loves it and wants more in this style.
