This is an amazing starter course for Russian. Built and designed more for a person who is going to be traveling to Russia and wants a basic grasp of the language (all the 'in 10 minutes a day' books are), but presented in a way that the lessons will stick with you. Recommended for all students of the Russian language.
My husband and I each used a Learn Russian in Ten Minutes A Day workbook for just a month before a trip to Russia and it doubled our enjoyment of our trip!It gave us the ability to read Russian well enough that my husband and I could depart from our escorted river tour, and take a public bus (the right one!), transfer to the Metro, get on and off at the right stations......so that in addition to the half-day tour of the Hermitage offered by our tour, we were able to take off on our own to spend an additional 2 days at the museum and see wonderful things that the average Russian tourist has no time for.On tours through Moscow, St.Petersburg, etc. we could read the billboards, protest posters, storefront signs, and all those little things that give human insight in addition to what you are hearing from the official tour guide.The book is well designed to accomodate adult learning principles. I could not believe how well these simple and often entertaining exercises worked! Yes, I did use the stickers on my stuff; they were a great vocabulary aid. Yes, I did use the flash cards and other included tools and references. Learning is supposed to be fun, folks....and this was!
I received this much sooner than the promised time. I had borrowed this book before from my local library, but of course could not use it to its full extent. It has stickers and tear out flash cards that are great. I highly recommend this book if you are trying to learn a foreign language. You will need other sources besides this, but it is an additional valuable aid.
The book is okay but the CD-Rom is terrible to listen to. The voice on the CD counts the numbers from one to ten and above, in English. At first I thought I got the wrong CD, then checked the label to make sure it is for this book "Russian in 10 minutes a day". What a strange method teaching the Russian language. Two years ago, I bought the "Spanish in 10 minutes a day" book, both the book and the CD-Rom go together and I enjoyed learning the Spanish from that book very much. But this Russian book, in which it has similar lessons as those in the Spanish book, is not a very good deal because of the fact that it's a waste of time to listen to the CD-Rom.
Fantastic, but it'll take you much longer to memorize the letters of the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, and a lot more than that to learn how to write them legibly, but if you keep at it for a minimum of 10 minutes a day you'll certainly be able to read the Russian words. Then you need to learn what they mean...
For anyone who wants to begin learning Russian, I wouldn't recommend relying on this book exclusively - you've got to have some language tapes or other means of aural study - but it makes for a nice compliment to more traditional texts. Of course, the "10 minutes a day" concept is silly. However, when study time comes around,I find myself turning to this book more than any other, especially when I only have a little time to study or when I've had a particularly draining day and don't feel up to more serious endeavors. The stickers are great, and I've found the pronunciations to be pretty accurate. It is a definite flaw that they don't show you the stressed vowels, but the individual pronunciations do account for the differences between stressed and unstressed vowels. On its own, this book isn't going to teach you Russian, but it is a fun and accessible supplemental study tool.
Easy to use and the web connection is great. Ten minutes a day is better than one hour a week for learning.
It is a good book, but the link to use the online content does not work, so not being able to hear the words makes the lesson pointless for me.
