This is a biography of one of the world's greatest scientists by another scientist and is based on a lengthy interview of Sanger by the author.The interview is reproduced in full and allows us to "hear" Sanger's voice as he describes his career to the author. The interview is the heart of the book but is dense with details that will be incomprehensible to those who are not already familiar with methods that allow the sequencing of proteins and nucleic acids.Unfortunately, it is clear that the author lacked sufficient material about Sanger for a book and, thus, chapters on the consequences of Sanger's work were added. But there was still not enough so, as suggested by the publisher (and noted by the author), short pieces by several distinguished scientists were added. Paragraphs from these pieces are quoted in Amazon's own "review" of the book, which is confusing.Unfortunately, there is little in the book to give the reader any idea of how Sanger appeared to non-scientists, and his adult life beyond the laboratory receives very short shrift.A portrait of a scientist by a scientist for scientists has its place but, in Sanger's case, a broader view of the life of this great man would be of greater interest to the general public and a greater inspiration to those who, we hope, might follow in his footsteps.
I was not impressed by this book. Sanger was an incredibly creative personality. Unfortunately this is missed almost totally by this account. Maybe the book is too long, maybe it should have focussed exactly on what made him to reach his creative summits. What a pity.
