Review

"Like the First Volume, it is well written and easy to read. Baptist Historians will find much familar ground covered in this work however, this reviewer particularly appreciated section two where the essential doctrine of providing vignettes of kep people in the Baptist story also makes his work more accessible to general readers which is always commendable." (The Baptist Quarterly, Rev Dr Brian Talbot Minister, Carbrain Baptist Church, Cumbernauld)"These volumes have already resulted in Nettles being described as a groundbreaking pioneer in Baptist history. This reviewer has no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending both of these two volumes, and is very much looking forward to the third one seeing the light of day." (R. Jeremy Brooks, Ramsey, British Church Newspaper)"Tom Nettles has produced a book that is wonderfully informative and, through its profiles of God honouring historical figures, should serve as encouragement to all." (Christians Today)"In this volume Dr. Nettles moves his readers from Baptists' beginnings in Great Britain to those critical areas of development in Baptist identity: religious liberty, separation between church and state, American Baptist confessional heritage, dynamics of Baptist church government, associational organization, and foreign missions issues. Careful research, clarity of thought, and inspirational quality are evident throughout, and these qualities commend The Baptists as a great blessing to readers in the 21st-century.The wide range Baptist personages, fidelity to historical detail, and warmth of piety, should make this work the definitive choice by readers who seek an accurate and inspiring knowledge of those who contributed so significantly to the Baptist heritage. By the grace of God and for the glory of Christ, may it receive the welcome reception that it deserves among a wide range of readers." (C. Berry Driver Jr. ~ Associate Vice President of Academic Resources, Librarian and Professor of Church History, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)

This is a great second volume to this series on Baptist history. Most Baptists are ignorant of their own history. Reading this book (and the first one on Baptist beginnings in England) will go a long way to correct this problem. I highly recommend the book. Buy it!

The Baptists: Volume Two by Tom Nettles continues where Volume One left off, expanding to America and telling the "story of Baptist beginnings and development in America." Nettles provides a helpful overview that is worth sharing. He states that these American Baptists "shared the views of their English brethren, but were able to be instrumental in the new world in the achievement of separation of church and state and liberty of conscience. The pioneer spirit combined with the movement of God's Spirit in the first Great Awakening to produce massive growth of Baptists in New England, the Middle Colonies, and particularly in the South." It is this growth and influence that Nettles explores. Nettles is a top notch Baptist historian and this volume continues to show his hard work and helpfulness in bringing these figures from the past to present day readers. I would guess that many modern day Baptist are completely ignorant of any Baptist history. Reading Nettles three volumes would surely be beneficial to modern day Baptist churches. The first thing I noticed was how many names I was unfamiliar with compared to the names in volume one. Volume one contained historical sketches of men like William Kiffin, Hanserd Knollys, Benjamin Keach, Andrew Fuller, and William Carey. I was already familiar with these men, though not in the depth that Nettles brought, but their names where at least familiar to me. This volume contained names that I was either vaguely familiar with or not familiar with at all. Names like John Clarke, John Leland, Oliver Hart, John Gano, Richard Furman, Shubal Stearns, and Gerhard Oncken where introduced to me for the first time in many cases. I quickly noticed that there was a gap in my knowledge of Baptist history, from the men in volume one to more modern day Baptist names and my thankfulness to Nettles for his work in this volume increased. Nettles brings his wealth of knowledge of history and theology into this volume for the reader to trace not only significant Baptists figures but also how theology was shaped over time. Nettles is very readable, considering some of the theological topics that he addresses.Nettles has provided a timeline at the front of this book that helps the reader to see how all of these figures and significant events in history relate chronologically. I was thrilled to see Ann Judson in this volume. I recently read an outstanding biography of Adoniram Judson and was very pleased to be able to read these pages devoted to Ann. Such a significant figure in Baptist history and in the history of missions deserves to be in the historical book. Nettles is superb in bringing these historical figures into this volume and has provided a huge blessing to the church. I highly recommend this volume to anyone seeking a better understanding of both the people and the theology of Baptist history.I received a free copy of this book from Christian Focus Publications in exchange for an honest review.
