OK, so i got in the series with a couple of pre new 52 books and the 5th novel of the new 52this by no means is bad...but the team seems...dysfunctional...and a part of that might be because there is no oricale and the inclusion of poison ivy in the roaster
Birds of Prey was a book I was really looking forward to because I really wanted something really solid, from characters like black canary and katana and I can't say this book let me down. We certainly didn't see the best of black canary just yet, but this was a great introduction into that and i'm sure we will get there upon reading this series. Katana gets a lot of shine here, but there was an aspect about her character or more so aspects of how certain characters view the character which were questionable, but you can tell they plan on exploring that and hopefully, they resolve that issue just out of my respect for that character. I can't say I had any issues with the book. If i had to nit pick i'd say they kind of hit you over the head with the fact that these area all supposed to be super hot crime fighting ladies at times, rather than them being ladies that kick ass that happen to hot. If that makes much sense. But other than that, I gotta say I really enjoyed reading this book. It's fun. It was easy to read. It's not the most thought provoking and deep read but it was a pretty fun action comic with interesting characters, with characters I was interested to read, and with characters I became interested in. I had a fun time reading and following these characters and I plan on reading more from the series. An easy 7.5/10 from me. I'm looking forward to more.
The art to me in this volume was terrible. I'm definitely not a fan of Jesus Saiz's work. It has no definition. No Detail. It seems like he should be drawing art for some young children's cartoon. In addition to the lack of detail, none of his characters looked very good. The design concept of Black Canary and Ivy were the worst looks either character has ever had in their long histories. At the end of the book Jim Lee has some concept art that looked much better. David Finch had a couple of covers featured in the collection. His few pages put Saiz's work to shame. Too bad it was only those few pages though. Overall I give the art 2 stars because 70-75% of all comic art I've ever seen is better than what is in this collection.The writing was the polar opposite of the art. I'd never heard of Duane Swierczynski prior to reading this, but am now a fan. He infuses more of a spy type feel like Bond or Bourne into a hero comic. The storyline was great. So great, in fact, that I'm looking forward to the 2nd volume despite the terrible art. The only thing I didn't care for in the story was Ivy being on a team with heroes. She isn't even an anti-hero. She is a villian plain and simple. The story gets a 4.5.In closing, I'd say the story was the only enjoyable part of the whole. This could have been a great volume with better artwork, but as is, It's merely good. Definitely not for everyone. If you aren't a diehard fan of one of the main characters or you don't care about the art in your comics, pick up something else.
I am, in general, a pretty big fan of The Birds of Prey. I love my female super-villains and heroines and Birds is a great line up. I have read a lot of the older arcs but I am truly enjoying a lot of the New 52 arcs.Starling is new in the DC game and I'm really digging her character so far. This is the first volumes you will find her in, she was created by writer Duane Swierczynski. I find her fascinating in both design and unfolding characteristics, such as her apparent religious views. I am curious to see how those views will play out as this story unfolds.Poison Ivy, well, let's just say she is my favorite DC character that has ever existed. So I may be a bit biased when it comes to her, though I am not loving the New 52 bodysuit. I truly hope that they will build onto her character more in this story because she felt a bit flat.Black Canary, another favorite character of mine. I think Swierczynski has done a good job with her character but has left some unanswered questions, which hopefully have been addressed in subsequent volumes. Then add in Batgirl. BAM. Great team! On the flip side, I find Katana interesting but found her story to be rather uninteresting so far.Onto Choke, the villain that these ladies have teamed up to fight. He's certainly an intense villain with his ability to control minds through implanted rhymes. With a cast featuring anti-heroines/villains, things are action packed and the girls don't always play by the rules. It is absolutely a great read from the New 52 line up!I actually have not read the subsequent volumes yet but they're already on my shelf at home- so SOON! I will likely update this review after I read a few more trade volumes.
I've never read any of the Birds of Prey comics before but had always been intrigued by them, so this was a nice introduction to them.We start off with Black Canary and Starling, add in the somewhat disturbing Katana (who talks to the spirit of her dead husband), then Poison Ivy, and finally Batgirl. The addition of Poison Ivy is odd for me as I had always viewed her as a villain. It was nice seeing Natural mostly as I just finished the first 2 books about her.The entire story seems to resolve around a villain called Choke and his small army of soldiers wearing invisible suits. I liked the central idea behind how Choke controlled the army.Things that didn't seem to make sense was how the team seemed to see the invisible army so easily. The ending seemed a little rushed, particularly how they identified Choke.However, I did like the story overall and really liked the artwork. I highly recommend this book.I read this on my 7"kindle fire HD with panel view and had no problem reading it.
