William F. Powell studied at the Art Student's Career School in New York; Harrow Technical College in Harrow, England; and the Louvre Free School of Art in Paris, France. His work has been represented in major galleries and reproduced in the form of illustrations, prints, and limited-edition collector's plates. He has been professionally involved in fine art, commercial art, and illustration for more than 45 years. His experience as an instructor includes oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, colored pencil, and pastel with subjects ranging from landscapes and seascapes to still life, portraiture, and wildlife. He holds awards for the technical side of his art, which has been used in major space and environmental programs.

These newer books seem to be better written, communicate better, and are more helpful that those of the olden days when I was young. I especially like his two books on color recipes for landscapes and for portraits. you should look into these three. They are very helpful.In my younger days I tended toward the browns, and overworking paint usually produces "mud." Knowing where to start with some expectation helps you gain a confidence with your color pallet quicker than the hit and miss surprise. Some of those "happy little accidents" Bob Ross used to call them, are not so happy.Having a firmer grasp of color and how to use it to convey mood, time, and so forth is extremely helpful in painting in oil or acrylic. I like the painting styles of Bob Ross and Jerry Yarnell, but these books by Powell are extremely helpful. Especially as Bob Ross used a rather simplified pallet. It is nice to consider colors like chromium oxide green, rose madder, and such to add some spice to a pallet that is Prussian blue, van dyke brown, sap green, indian yellow. etc.
These recipes and instructions are all over the place. There are recipes for colors, yes, but as for an order to them there is not. The index may make sense to one individual but only that one individual. This book was put together with formulas, pictures and filler words. Buyer beware.

While I think the overall idea is great I fully agree with another review regarding the organization. If you like a color you see in the book, it's identified by number but there's no way to find that number in the index without looking through the entire index and reading each entry. THAT'S INSANE!!I was so frustrated by this that I sat down and made a list of numbers. Then I went through the entire index writing the recommendation given next to each number. It took hours but now gives me a useable guide.For many of the colors in the book there are multiple listings for how to use it. But there are also numerous #'s with no recommendation at all. Why are these in the book? They're taking up valuable space that could be used for a cross index of color swatches.I bought this book having seen his previous one and thinking "no one could make this stupid mistake twice." I was wrong. If you like using the book by first looking up in the index what it is you want to paint and then reference the given # I suppose this book is just fine. Forget it if you want to do it the other way around.
This is a great book. The instructions are well written. I study the instructions and index many times before I attempt a painting. I can see an instant improvement in the harmony of my colors. One of the best art books I have purchased off of Amazon.
This is the second color mixing book by the same author that I purchase some time back. I am self-teaching oils and these two books have helped me to see color combinations and mixture formulae. This way I can tweek the colors to meet my particular oils and their hues.
I have this book and the other like it on mixing color for portraits. You really can't just mix up formulas...not like cooking, but I still don't know what colors do to each other and find this book very helpful...at least I now have a jumping off point. I don't have the luxury of being able to study in person with anyone...so I really appreciate this type of specific guidance.***love the spiral binding...lays flat and is small enough to take along outdoors to paint.
Great book. Lots of information that is necessary when mixing paint.
