I have read all of the Mac McRyan books. I like the Minneapolis setting and the fast pace of the books. But if I had read the reviews on this one I wouldn't have bought it. I DO NOT understand why actors, and now Authors??, believe we care about their politics. There are shows and movies that I will not watch any more because of just that; I just want to be entertained. After actors and singers spouting off I don't have any interest in listening to them either.BUT...now it seems AUTHORS are going to try to straighten us readers out about our politics, obviously we are just thinking the wrong way. Please I don't care about your politics. I stopped reading an author completely because she thought it was her mission to educate her readers. NO, the authors mission is to entertain me when I buy his or her book. I don't want to pay my hard earned money to hear their politics, even if they think they are being subtle. Next time Mr. Stelljes, lecture your friends, coworkers, neighbors,, etc. but NOT your READERS!!
I'm a long time Minnesota resident and am very familiar with the areas described. Being a long time time listener of "Garage Logic", I was introduced via that radio show to an author named John Camp many years ago. We now know him as John Sanford. I have only read 2 of Mr. Stelljes' novels, but each one seemed to conjure up the ghost of Mr. Sanford's hero, Lucas Davenport. I thought that odd. A new author - maybe, but not an established one sez I to me, so being the immensely talented reader that I think I am, I went back and re-read both of the books I have available by Mr.Stelljes, and found I was right. Well, wrong. Well, a little of both maybe. There are some similarities, but why not? The 5-State area of the upper Midwest certainly isn't crime free, but unlike a lot of other places, the type of crimes and the means of dealing with them stays pretty constant, therefore the similarities. The problem was with me. Once I re-read the books, especially Blood Silence, I realized that I was the proud owner of two very well written novels, and wanted more - and - I just now received the next entry in the series. As soon as possible, I wish to obtain the books in the series I don't have access to at present. I gave this book 4 stars, but only because there were a couple of places where a character interjected a comment, question, or answer in scene in which he or she was never introduced to begin with. It drove me crazy going back page by page to figure out how they got there, and how I missed their entrance, but couldn't figure it out. I do recommend Blood Silence as a novel, but even more importantly, I recommend it due to it's very timely subject matter. Please don't miss it. And if I may - to the gentleman who insists that we should not read this book because he did not agree with the subject matter, why in the world should we accept your opinion over the author's? At least he did his homework to get his facts., What have you done aside from simply not agreeing with his conclusions? What in the world is the next step? Severely criticizing the book because there was probably never a Police Chief or Sheriff in Williston with the same names as he gave his characters in the book?. It is a fictional novel! Please get over yourself! This is supposed to be a critique of the author and his writing ability, not a criticism of his politics. I'm sure there is another forum somewhere which addresses that.
Before you start this book, please realize it is the fifth one of a series. While it could be read as a standalone, I would recommend you start with the first title in order to understand all of the back story of the main characters.The author does his usual nice job of getting you into the story, making you feel as if you are right in the middle of the action and it is another page turner. I picked this up for $3.99 on my Kindle and certainly received more than $3.99 worth of entertainment value out of it: if you enjoyed the previous novels in this series, I am confident you will enjoy this one, also.
I've read all books in this series now and eagerly await the next. Sometimes when I should be doing something else, I grab my Kindle and read for what seems like a few minutes, but turns out to be an hour and a half. Without giving away the plot, Mac is a better person than I'll ever be. I am truly impressed by the authors ability to dig deep into human nature and put words together that are easy to read, flow so well that you don't realize you're reading; it's more like you're hearing the characters in real life.This book takes you on a ride (literally) from DC to multiple other states and back with seemingly unrelated crimes and weaves a storyline that is both believable and timely. I like the flow of characters that progress from one book to the other and a little more of the characters are revealed in each book. You will not be disappointed with this book or, for that matter, the entire series. Crime solving, government, environmental issues and a series of psychopathic, money hungry bad guys...what more could you ask for?
Just finished Blood Silence and found it just as good as the other books I've read by this author.Great story with all the elements of a fantastic read. Sex, power, money, and murder keep you wanting to keep reading until you finish it and then wishing there were still more to read.Roger Stelljes just keeps writing winner after winner and I'm looking forward to his next book.This is a great series for those of you that are police murder mystery fans.
Nice plot that unveils some of the societal and environmental hazards caused by our appetite for cheap oil. As usual, Mac's adventures kept me busy turning pages was page-turning until the wee small hours when I finished. My only complaint is that I missed Dara. If she stays in Europe much longer, I may just go join her. (Hmm---maybe she is checking out how successful wind-power is in northern Europe!)
